Site Analysis

Red Hook is one of the uniques place in america. Our group discovered that by visiting Red Hook, we walked its streets so we can have a first-hand interaction with the area. We took pictures of the buildings and natural elements that dwelled there. Then, we did a site analysis of Red Hook. We researched its rich history, the importance of its location, the commerce that existed there, the climate of the area, and many more elements, which gave us a well-rounded knowledge of Red Hook.

Building typology

Building Typology

1-Which building typology you are researching?
Base on my site analysis I decided to do a nature center.

2-Why are you researching in this building typology?
The goal of this project is to look for a building that I have not done before. I choose to do a nature center because it is the first time I will be researching on this type of building.

3-What is the specialty of this building type will you like to research i.e. museum for dance, school for digital media…
This building type will be focused on nature and art. I thank these two elements are related to each other and a combination of these two will be perfect for this quiet area in red hook.

4-What are the examples that you will be researching. List examples location and Architect (floor plan side plan images

1- De Oostvaarders
Architects Drost+Van Veen architecten
Location Alemere, The Netherlands
De Oostvaarders is a structure which has a diverse program. The structure contains a wide range of room including an information room, a classroom, and a restaurant. I chose this building because it is similar to the program I would like to inaugurate in my structure.

2- Disaster Prevention and Education Center
Architects: DRA&U
Location: Istanbul, Turkei

Red Hook is a flood area. Just few months ago, Hurricane Sandy has left many structures such as Fairway severely damaged. Therefore, including a Disaster prevention component to the building would be useful.

3- Visitor and Nature Interpretive Center
Design by: Architects Manuel Fonseca Gallego
Location: in Albacete in Spain
Visitor and Nature Interpretive Center is uniquely a work of beauty. It is compose of simple geometry form which marries into one solid being. The center is situated on top of its area, contemplating its natural surroundings. I chose this building because it possesses one quality that is green and resourceful; due to its location it has the upmost use of passive solar. This is a feature I would like to integrate in my structure.

4-Natural Science Center
Architects: Nord Arkiter in
Location:Bjerringbro, Denmark
Natural Science Center contains a sustainability. The structure has managed to use the natural resources to help it carry out many functions. For example, during the day the structure use solar energy as a means of getting warm air. This is a green feature I would like to assimilate in my structure

5-Rocksalt Seafood restaurant
Architects: Guy Hollaway
Red Hook is a community full of bars. However, Red Hook lacks an elegant restaurant. An elegant restaurant will be a good pastime for the residents of Red Hook. In addition, it will be a tool to attract residents from other community to create exposure for the Red Hook community.

6-The Jewish Center
Architects: Wandel Hoefer Lorch
location; Munish, Germany.
The Jewish Center appears to be nothing more than two boxes, one on top of the other; a building which can easily be unappreciated and interpreted as just ordinary. However, the roots of its existence is the story which embellishes the building with gold and silver. Germany during the Holocaust massacred the Jews mercilessly. The story of the Holocaust is a story the Jews can never erase from their memory, they carry that story in their bones and heartbeats. However, to somewhat ease the pain for Jews living in Germany the Jewish Center stands. The Jewish center is declaring the past was that of sorrow for the Jews, but in the present the Jews and the German can hold hands to move towards the future. This is the story of integration that burst forth from the simple Jewish Center. As I think of the Jewish Center it reminds me of Red Hook. Red Hook is a place of violence and brutality. It also needs a center to help integrate all groups of people so they can move to a safer future as well.

7-Green square Library ad Plaza
Architects: Hyunjoon Yoo
Location: Autralia
Library is an essential component to every community. It would be a beneficial resource to people of all age groups within Red Hook. It will be a service for students seeking to do homework and research, but simply lack a book or computer. This is why I would like to add a library section in my structure.

8-Tunica River park Visitor Center
Achitects: Williamson Pounders
Location on the Mississipi River near Robinsonville county,

Tunica River Park Visitor Center is a structure which rises as if it too was a part of nature. The center is embrace with many natural features which has definitely become part of its enriching characteristics. The Tunica River Park Visitor Center is compose of three compounds: harbor, visitor center and natural experience. These three elements have elegantly complemented one another and I would like my structure to also rise embodying these components.

9-Salburua Nature Interpretative Centre design
Architects: QVE Arquitectos
Location: Spain wetland area
SalburĂșa Nature Interpretation Center is rested near the delightful presence of water. The water is in harmony with the unique shape of the building. The building contains a cantilever which is situated parallel from the water. I chose this building because my building shares the same geographic character of SalburĂșa Nature Interpretation Center(wetland). In addition, the shape of the building is inspiring and I would like to incorporate a similar shape to my building.

10-Jeruzalem Musseum of Nature And Science
Architects:MYS Architects
Location Jerusalem

5-what are your goals for working with this building type?

My goals are to design a functional building and in which the community will enjoy every moment they will spend in there because they will have their peace of mind when they are in that place

6-What are the program elements that you see included at this point in your building? (may evolve once more research is done).

· Entry

· Lobby

· Offices

· Educational rooms

· Restrooms

· Movie Theater

· Restaurant

· Security office

· Exposition Room

· Conference Room

· Amusement Room

· Reading Room

· Garden

Parti
I studied the area of Red Hook. I noticed a lot of its forgotten treasures and its obvious needs. After entertaining many thoughts, I decided to construct a nature center, which would be a constructive and entertaining resource for the residents in Red Hook. I had an architectural vision, a program, and many more features I would like to embody in the nature center. Then, I research other structures which are already erected and contain elements of my vision for the nature center. Lastly, I differentiate a massing versus a parti.

HIEARCHY+SYMETRIE

I am exploring the different types of buildings that creatively stand and possess a unique character. In this exploration I am constantly looking to identify buildings which contain elements of symmetry in their design. In addition, I attempt to analysis and recognize the detail of the shape, the location and the different components of its hierchy.

De Oostvaarders

The building is assimmetrical however the Architect shows symetrie in the second floor windows.By looking at this building two great ideas are emmerged. The relationship between the building and the landscape the antrance is small while the bach of the building is pretty large and it is open into a water view. In one side of the building they are two windows in the second floor and that show symetry however the buildind within itself is assymetrical. By looking at the antrace of the building there is a hierarchi. There is a yellow color that is very bright and it dominates the front of the building. The right hand side is thicker than the left hand side. However, the area where the yellow color is, is the main emprasis of the building.

This floor plan of theDisaster Prevention and Education Center by Architects: DRA&U is an 8 shape with curve par

In the Visitor and Nature Interpretive Center I am trying to look for symetrie and Hierarchy whith is a very important part of a design. . Even thought the Architect repeats some elements, he repeats the geometric shapes in rythm because the shapes are different sizes. When it come to symetry the two wings on both side of the building are just like a pattern. The hiearchy of this building is the main antrance and the two wings on the left hand right are in proportion whith each other.
